The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said it has sustained the supply of 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity across Jos and its environs through another transformer after its twin was burnt last Tuesday.
The General Manager (Public Affairs), Mrs Ndidi Mbah in a statement yesterday said
the engineers isolated the burning 150MVA, 330/132/33 kilovolt (kv) transformer from other energized parts of the substation, and quickly saved the second transformer.
Six hours after the incidence, the engineers restored the 330kV Gombe transmission line passing through the substation and re-energized the second transformer supplying Distribution load centres in Jos.
“To ensure there is no impact on the power supply to Jos; TCN has successfully diverted the 30mw normally supplied from Jos Substation; Gombe Substation now supplies 30mw to Bauchi. The incidence did not cause disruption of power supply to Jos and environs,” Mrs Mbah said in the statement.
TCN said the fire which completely razed the first transformer started around 5pm on Tuesday and lasted till 10pm. The statement said a conductor snapped and released oil from the transformer bushing which intensified the fire.
“TCN engineers in conjunction with the state fire service worked very hard to put out the fire, which unfortunately burnt down the power transformer. Management is intensifying effort to replace the burnt transformer,” the public utility firm said in the statement.
TCN regrets inconveniences caused electricity customers especially those in Jos and environs, it added.
