The Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, has supported 200 orphans from 17 local government areas of the state with N50,000 each.
Buni said the gesture was to assist them with a little start-up capital after skills acquisition.
“It is our hope that this assistance would add value to your lives and future,” the governor said.
The ages of the orphans ranged from 9 to 14 years.
Ustaz Babagana Malam Kyari, the coordinator of the programme and special adviser to Governor Buni on religious affairs, said this was the first time orphans in the state were supported in such a large number.
He said the gesture would reduce street begging, especially among orphans who do not have breadwinners.
Kyari called on guardians of the orphans to support them and ensure judicious use of the resources.
