The Bayero University Kano (BUK) Mass Communication Alumni Association (BUMCAA) will Saturday hold a public lecture to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first set of mass communication students of the institution.

The Chairman of the caretaker committee of BUMCAA, Dr Abubakar Minjibir, who was among the first set of students in 1981, told journalists that the celebration would include a career talk on Friday.

Dr Minjibir said with the association formed in late 2020, like minds decided that it was worth marking the 40th anniversary looking at how far the department had come since 1981 and the number of students it had produced who had gone to achieve great heights in the information and communication industry.

He further said circumstances made it impossible to hold the anniversary in 2021, which was the 40th year the department started producing graduates.

He explained that BUK was the third university in Nigeria to train students in the field of mass communication after the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and the University of Lagos (Unilag) when the programme was introduced in 1978, a year after the institution became a university.

He noted that: “BUMCAA, formed last year, is open to all individuals that have gone through the department for any course.”

On the agenda of the anniversary, Dr Minjibir said the career talk would be handled by four alumni of the department: Garba Bello Kankarofi, a 1981 set and former Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), who would talk on advertising; Mukhtar Sirajo, a 1988 set and President of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), who would talk on career in public relations; Hajiya Sa’a Ibrahim, who ran a master’s in public relations in the department in the early 2000s and is the immediate past Chairperson of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), would speak on career in broadcasting; and Yushau Shuaib, a 1992 set and founder of PRNigeria, who would speak on career in online journalism.

He added that the anniversary lecture would be delivered by Kankarofi, with the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, also an alumnus of the department, as the father of the day and the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the institution, Prof Sagir Adamu Abbas, as the chief host.
