Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has commenced a postgraduate Diploma in the teaching of reading to revive reading culture and promote effective learning at all levels.
The Nigeria Centre for Reading Research and Development (NCRRD) domiciled in the institution in collaboration with the university’s Department of English instituted the course with the support of Florida State University, USA, Daily Trust gathered.
The director, Prof. Talatu Musa Garba, who spoke on Tuesday at the opening of the 3rd Annual National Conference on the Teaching of Early Grade Reading in Nigeria, said the centre was developed to bring together stakeholders to boost Early Grade Reading in Nigeria.
“The centre is now focused to offer various courses in collaboration with the Department of Education, BUK following the establishment of its collaboration with the Florida State University. Now a Postgraduate Diploma in the teaching of Reading has been approved by the university and advertised on BUK official website.
“Also, arrangements have been concluded to offer Certificate in the Teaching of Early Grade Reading in July 2022”, she said.
In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, said it was the MoU between the university and Florida State University that brought about the establishment of the centre in the school.
He said the MoU provided the opportunity for the academic fellows of the centre to receive advanced training on research and teaching of Reading at the Florida State University for a period of six months.
He added that the construction of the permanent building for the centre had reached 95% completion and was being furnished and equipped accordingly.
