The Building Collapse Prevention Guild has called on states and the federal government to work closely with the organisation to prevent incessant building collapses in Nigeria.
Immediate-past president of the group, Engr. Eddy Atumonyogo, who made the call during the guild’s Annual General Meeting held recently, urged government to collaborate with the organisation to monitor construction activities in order to ensure best practices were adopted.
He said, “The Guild still has a lot of work to do in persuading the various governments to collaborate with it in monitoring construction activities to ensure best practices as well as enlightening the investing public on the need to engage competent professionals to handle their developments.
“Despite all the efforts in year 2022, there were still a total of 62 collapse of buildings, either partially or fully.
“A critical look shows that 23 states had incidence of partial or full collapse of buildings, with Lagos State topping the chart with 20 incidences.”
Also speaking at the event, new president of the group, Mr Yusuf Sulaimon, said members will always promote the ideals of BCPG without compromising standards.
He said, “During our time, we will focus more on the prevention of building and infrastructural collapse rather than pursuing collapsed buildings in our society.”
Guest speaker at the event and Executive Director of University of Lagos Business School, Prof Mike Adebamowo, called for the deployment of technology for monitoring of construction sites to tame quackery and other root causes of building collapse.
He said, “Governments and regulators must adequately fund its regulatory agencies and build staff capacity to enforce building codes and implement strategies for stemming collapse of buildings.Relevant agencies to continuously audit buildings and bridges to detect distress early and avert collapse.”
