President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that no part of the country should think about secession.
The president gave the warning on Monday while featuring on the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) programme tagged “Good Morning Nigeria”.
Nigeria fought a bitter civil war between 1967 and 1970 against secessionist Biafra. Buhari was then a young military officer.
Buhari, who emphasised that Nigeria had come to stay, said the country had to be secured first to manage it efficiently, adding that all Nigerians should cooperate in that regard.
“But the first thing is that we have to secure the country before we can efficiently manage it. Without security, nothing will work. We are asking for the cooperation of Nigerians.
“None of the parts of the country should think that it can go on its own. Nigeria has come to stay”, President Buhari stated.
Buhari called on the citizenry to be cautious of the current situation of Nigeria, saying they must join hands in saving the country. President Buhari also insisted that corruption had to be fought, saying the economy was virtually in tatters because of corruption and inefficiency.
“I am appealing to Nigerians at all levels to be very cautious of the situation we are in. Let us join our hands together and save this country. We have to fight corruption because we have to get the infrastructure led by power”.
Speaking on the challenges his administration had so far faced within the last two months, Buhari described unemployment as very big gunpowder the nation was sitting on.
“The challenges are what we foresaw in the APC and what we campaigned on. They are the three issues I mentioned earlier. The insecurity, the level of employment, especially of youths. There are reliable data that more than 60 percent of Nigerian population is youths and most of them are unemployed. This is a big keg of gun powder that the nation is sitting on.
“The economy is virtually in tatters because of corruption and inefficiency. The vicious cycle of corruption, insecurity and unemployment has to be broken. Otherwise, they will break this country,” the president said.
