Buhari tasks engineers on technologies, alternative source of revenue

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday tasked Nigerian engineers on innovative technologies that would create alternative source of wealth to the nation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2020 National Engineering Conference with the theme ‘Engineering Education and Lifelong Opportunities for Sustainable Development’, Buhari stressed the need for technologies that would propel the agro-economy of the nation as well as solve problems in the power sector.

Represented by the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, Buhari charged them on technologies that would enable free COVID-19 test to the populace.

He said the fallout of the pandemic had necessitated the deployment of technology to share knowledge remotely.

He said the standoff between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities was to provide transparency and efficient use of funds and completion of projects in university but promised it is striving hard to resolve the issues.

Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency, Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi, urged timely adoption of the emerging technologies in nascent evolving of the digital world.

President, Nigeria Society of Engineers, Muhammed Babagana, lamented the gap between engineering education and the practice obtained in Nigeria.
