Buhari seeks confirmation of Ariwoola as CJN, 19 others as INEC commissioners

President Muhammadu Buhari has requested the Senate to confirm Justice Olukayode Ariwoola as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.  

Buhari, in a letter read by Senate President Ahmad Lawan, said this was in line with constitutional provisions. 

Justice Ariwoola has been acting as the CJN following the retirement of his predecessor, Justice Tanko Muhammad.

Similarly, Buhari also sought the confirmation of 19 nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners for the INEC. 

In a letter dated 25th July, 2022, the president said the nomination of five Resident Electoral Commissioners were for renewal, while the other 14 were fresh appointments.  

The nominees for confirmation include: Ibrahim Abdullahi (Adamawa – Renewal); Obo O. Effanga (Cross River – Renewal); Umar Ibrahim (Taraba – Renewal); Agboke Mutiu Olaleke (Ogun – Renewal) and Samuel E. Egwu (Kogi – Renewal). 

Others are: Onyeka Pauline Ugochi (Imo); Muhammad Lawal Bashir (Sokoto); Ayobami Salami (Oyo); Amb. Zango Abdussamadu Abdu (Katsina); Queen Elizabeth Agwu (Ebonyi); and Agundu Oliver Tersoo (Benue). 

Also to be confirmed are: Yomere Gabriel Oritsemlebi (Delta); Yahaya Makarfi Ibrahim (Kaduna); Nura Ali (Kano); Agu Sylvia Uchenna (Enugu); Ahmed Yushau Garki (FCT); Hudu Yunusa (Bauchi); Uzochukwu Ikemefuna Chijioke (Anambra); and Mohammed B. Nura (Yobe).
