News of the victory came during the Council of State meeting, which was attended by former heads of state, Senate President, governors, some Ministers, and senior government officials.

As Secretary to Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, announced the good news, President Buhari led a round of applause, and declared: “He deserves it.”

The President promised full support of his government to ensure a successful tenure for the AfDB leadership.

Also, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), congratulated him.

In a statement from NiDCOM, the Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described Akinwunmi’s re-election as President of the continental institution as the right thing given his achievements.

Dabiri-Erewa stressed that many Nigerians are known for their integrity, dexterity, innovation and drive; making them most suitable candidates for international accolades and leadership roles, and not criminals as most people are quick to project the country as.

She said: “I hope that his coming back as the regional Chief of the Bank, will pave more grounds and strategies to develop Africa in various sectors.”
