Budget padding: PRP calls for forensic audit, review of Ningi’s suspension

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called for a forensic audit of the 2024 budget and urged for a reform of the budget process.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mohammed Ishaq, and made available to the Daily Trust in Abuja on Monday, the PRP expressed concern over the insensitivity of the National Assembly to pad the budget when many Nigerians are living in poverty.

“This audit should be conducted by a reputable and neutral third-party organization, with the findings made public to promote transparency and accountability,” the statement read in part.

The PRP also advocates for a reform of the budgetary process, which should include the implementation of strict guidelines to prevent undue influence on budgetary allocations, the establishment of a centralized database for tracking all budgetary processes, and the introduction of stringent penalties for any violation of these guidelines.

The party further called for the stoppage of constituency projects, stating that they are prone to abuse, corruption, and unfairness in how constituencies are treated.

The party criticized the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi after he raised alarm about budget padding, calling it “morally wrong and legally offensive.”
