Victims Drown As Gunmen Abduct Women, Children In Niger

Armed men suspected to be bandits have staged a fresh attack in Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.

A resident, who confirmed the attack to Daily Trust, said many women and children were abducted in the incident which happened at Gurmana Community in the LGA on Saturday.

Just as it was the case at Government Science College, Kagara, the armed men behind the attack reportedly dressed in military uniform.

Commenting on the attack, Sani Abubakar Yusuf Kokki, Co-convener, Concerned Shiroro Youths, said some of the victims who tried to escape drowned in a river Kaduna.

He said the bandits shot into the air frequently to instill fear in the victims, adding that some persons were shot.

As of the time of filing this report, Wasiu Abiodun, Police Public Relations Officer in Niger, could not be reached for comments as he neither answered calls nor replied the text message sent to him.

This is the third reported attack in Niger State in less than a week.

On Wednesday, armed men dressed in military uniform abducted staff and students of Government Science College, Kagara.

A student who attempted to escape was shot dead.

Hours after the Kagara incident, armed men raided communities, still in Gurmana, killing and kidnapping residents.

A resident told Daily Trust that the gunmen operated unchallenged for hours.
