Flood occasioned by heavy downpour on Monday morning aided the escape of yet to be ascertained number of prisoners from the Medium Federal Prisons, Kotonkarfe, Kogi local government area of Kogi State.
It was gathered that the ensuing flood from the torrential rain submerged the prisons and caused destruction to the structures.
Following the development, some of the prison inmates were said to have escaped.
The acting Chief Imam of Koton-Karfi Central Mosque, Saidu Suleiman Nuhu who also spoke on the incident, said river Osugu in the area overflowed it bound and destroyed many houses including the prison which led to the escape of some inmates.
When Daily Trust visited the Kogi State Office of the Correctional Service in Lokoja, it was learnt that the Controller and other principal officers had gone to the scene of the incident.
An official of the service who spoke on condition of anonymity said he was aware such incident happened but does not have the authority to comment on the details.
Meanwhile, our correspondent learnt that some of those that escaped following the incident have been rearrested.
