A fearless penguin chick finally plucked up the courage to stand up to a pair of bully boy sea birds who ganged up on it while its parents were away. Skuas and penguins are mortal enemies in Antarctica and the birds frequently eat the chicks when they are a few days old, if they can get them away from their fiercely protective mothers. Slowly the penguins get bigger and by the age of 12 weeks they are just about old enough to look after themselves while their parents go hunting for fish. Both the penguin and the birds’ only weapons are their sharp beaks but on this occasion the chick’s aggression won the day.
