They all came out of the starting blocks fast with angry outburst, insults, abuses and yabs raining down on the government of the day. I don’t blame them because that is how we are, we are living only in the present we never look at the past and sober up.
In Boston, the terrorists were caught in recorded time; why? How?
Internal security has always been an important issue in the US. Villages, towns, cities, states and the FG had always invested in there police and the FBI. Since the days of the Kennedy assignations, Oklohoma bombings, the different (successive) governments invested in there police: money, equipments and training.
After 911, the Department of Homeland Security which had been seriously underfunded was repositioned to actually coordinate national security. Twelve years after 911, Boston happened, the set down procedure for such incident swung into action immediately, the terrorists were caught. Truly this was due to years of patiently investing in security. We might ask, if it is that, then this shouldn’t have happened in the first place, but terrorist actions are the hardest to stop.
Through the media frenzy, I never heard the Republicans point accusing fingers at the Democrats or Obama of failing to protect the American people. They didn’t use it to rundown the government. Instead they closed ranks with the governments and gave their support. The questions will come surely, but long later when the leak has been blocked.
Boko Haram bombs have been falling left, right, centre and no Boston is occurring. Why?
Let’s look at the police force/security agencies in Nigeria.  The successive military/Obasanjo governments in Nigeria had always never invested in the civil security agencies, but   used them  as the doormats.
The Shagari government tried to build their capacity and capability to a large extent to strength internal security. And after a long time, the Yar’adua governmentt started to invest in them, but so little was done. And now the present government is trying to invest, but in a crisis  like dis? The foundation will shake.
Imagine after so many years, no data base has been formed, no forensic labs, no procedure for investigations,   men who have been doormats for years, no informants among the citizenry and a citizenry who take community and personal security carelessly.  That is the Nigerian security situation.
To worsen the case instead of closing in with the government to help, the situation the opposition is using it to score political points and we the citizen join up.
In Boston citizen voluntarily brought their camcorders, tapes from there personally installed cctv cameras to help investigation, but in Nigeria we believe the security agencies are magicians, wizards and witches that’ll make a potion and caught the bombers. By the way, why is the government paying them?
I keep wondering about the luxury bus bomb in Kano. I’m sure the unions collect a bucket load of dues. Would it have been overboard for them to have installed cctv cameras? This is for their own safety too. But like all Nigerians with the mentality “na govt suppose do am.”
How many estates decide to fix cameras to secure their environs? It’s the work of government. If we hear thieves will attack our neighbors, don’t even inform him, instead we buy more padlocks to secure our door. And we wake up and scream Boston!!! Toh take time. God is watching.
Governent really needs to take a step back and repositon our security agencies, lay down emergencies and security response procedures. Invest heavily in the agencies in capacity and equipment. And equipment means not just vehicles, communication gadgets, forensic labs, central database of citizens and also massive re-training of man.
Community police should be introduced and really the police should be decentralized .
