Borno Rep Raises Alarm Over Annual Invasion Of Farmlands By Elephants From Cameroon

The Member representing Bama/Ngala/Kala Balge Federal Constituency of Borno State, Zainab Gimba (APC, Borno) has called on the Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Wildlife Park to provide an immediate and long-term solution to address the menace of Elephants in the area annually.

Presenting a motion of urgent public importance at the Plenary on Thursday, she said the Elephants come from Waza National Park in Cameroon annually, from where they move back and forth through the route in Ngala and Kala Balge local government areas of Borno State. 

She said, “In the cause of their movement they destroy crops and other farm produce thus affecting the means of livelihood of the people in the Areas.

“The destruction of these farms may further precipitate untold hardship on the people in food security, Considering that these places are under military control.

“Attempts were made by the ConservatorGeneral to acquire some equipment meant to scare away the Elephants which in effect will curtail damage to Crops and other food products on the farm fields”.

Rep. Gimba commended the Borno State government for its quick response but said it was overwhelmed, hence the need for the Federal Government to come to their rescue, 

The House adopted the motion and urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide the victims with relief materials. 

Mandated the relevant House Committees on Environment, Disaster Management and Poverty Alleviation to ensure compliance.
