Borno raises 300,000 seedlings for GGW projects

The Borno State government has raised over 300,000 seedlings of assorted species of neem, jathropha, gum Arabic and others to compliment the efforts of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW). This is to tackle the detrimental social, economic and environmental impacts of land degradation and desertification in northern Nigeria.

A statement from NAGGW said the Great Green Wall (GGW) projects in some parts of Borno State were gravely affected by the insurgency in the state as seedlings, planted tree crops, boreholes as well as fences were destroyed.

The seedlings, according to the statement, would be used for this year’s planting season, which will soon commence.

The GGW programme, which is an African Union (AU) programme to fight desertification in frontline countries, expects that the state governments should be the key drivers in the implementation.
