Borno flood: FG orders impact assessment on livestock

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to conduct an immediate assessment of the flood disaster’s impact on the livestock sector in Borno State.

During a courtesy visit to Borno State governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri, Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chinyere Akujobi said the president’s directive reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the livestock industry in the aftermath of the disaster.

Dr Akujobi said in line with the president’s instructions, the ministry has established an Expert Working Group (EWG) to support the assessment mission in Borno.

The group is tasked with evaluating the extent of the damage to the livestock sector and proposing immediate, short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures to support stakeholders, she said.

The delegation engaged in discussions with Governor Zulum and the Emir of Borno, both of whom acknowledged the pressing challenges confronting the community and stressed the need to revitalise the livestock sector.

Meetings with representatives from various segments of the livestock value chain revealed significant hardships faced by livestock farmers, poultry producers, and other industry participants.

To address the immediate needs of livestock farmers, the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (LPRES) has established a model veterinary hospital.

This facility will provide essential veterinary care, serve as an Emergency Operation Centre, offer training opportunities, and support private veterinary practices.

Dr Akujobi said, “By uniting and implementing holistic solutions, we can help rebuild the lives and livelihoods of affected livestock farmers, thereby contributing to the resilience and well-being of the community as a whole.”
