Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has said he will expand the drip irrigation and other modern farming methods to maximise food production in Borno State.
The governor disclosed this on Wednesday during an inspection visit to one of the pilot drip irrigation schemes established by his administration in Koiri farms.
The Koiri scheme, which covers 20 hectares of land, was designed to produce 364 tons of maize and sesame in one crop cycle, with a target of over 1,092 tons of other crops in three cycles per year.
Zulum said the evolving approach was to achieve food sufficiency and export of cash crops and other agricultural products such as maize and cassava, among others.

“Let’s put things in order carefully. Borno State will start exporting sesame and other cash crops in the near future.
“We will then shift our focus and invest our resources in irrigated agriculture or rather food production. I assure you that we will provide the necessary political will to achieve food sufficiency,” Zulum said.
