Stakeholders in border management in Nigeria have called for prompt data and information sharing amongst all relevant agencies of the government to enhance national security.
This is contained in the communiqué issued at the end of a two-day stakeholders’ workshop on border management to review the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)’s National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) document, in Keffi, Nasarawa state.
The communiqué, which was signed by all 20 agencies and five observers in attendance, also called on the NIS to put in place an effective mechanism for monitoring and evaluating the effective implementation of the NBMS document.
The design and review of the NBMS was facilitated by the International Organization for Migration, IOM, with financial supports from the European Union.
The IOM Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Frantz Celestin, while speaking during the workshop, said the NBMS will strengthen the governance of migration in EU partner countries and the sustainable return and reintegration of returning Nigerian migrants.
Represented at the workshop by Ms. Ukamaka Osigwe, Celestin said the NBMS took into consideration the changing realities and new challenges in managing Nigeria’s borders.
He said: “It would also articulate and outline the intersection between NIS’ responsibilities at the border and those of other concerned agencies for further complementary of action through Integrated Border Management approaches.”
The NBMS will run from 2019 to 2023.
