Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has warned Nigerians to avoid the antics of hooligans who pretend as democrats, in order to safeguard the country’s hard-earned democracy.
Obasanjo stated this in a remark to mark the 61st birthday of ex President Goodluck Jonathan, and a formal launch of his memoir entitled, “My Transition Hour,” in Abuja on Tuesday.
He insisted that despite some reservations, democracy remains the best form of government, that build and unites, but only when nurtured by democrats, and not hooligans.
He urged Nigerians to continue to engender calm atmosphere for the growth and development of the country, saying the nation owes huge responsibility to Africa and the black race.
“All said and done, there is no substitute to democracy. It builds and does not destroy; it unites and does not divide. But that is only if it is in the hands of democrats, not hooligans. So, avoid hooligans in democracy.”
“Nigeria has responsibility for Africa and the entire black race in this world. Let’s continue to make Nigeria cool and calm,” Obasanjo said.
The former Head of State also said “Jonathan has a residual responsibility to continue to serve God and his people” even as he has quit power.
