They added that the gunmen fired at the crowd, killing 20 people before attacking several houses where they executed men and carted away foodstuff.

Commending the Nigerian military for their impressive performance in the war against insurgency, the former Council Chairman of Madagali Local Government Area, Maina Ularamu who confirmed the attack,  called for security presence in the remote areas.

He noted that deploying soldiers to the connecting villages to Sambisa forest could effectively check the attacks by remnants of  the militants who were hunger stricken and hiding in the area.

The Police spokesman in Adamawa State, DSP Othman Abubakar said 18 villagers died in the attack.

However, the Army Public Relations Officer of the 20 Task Force Battalion with headquartered in Mubi, Captain Badare did not immediately respond to several calls by our correspondent.

Madagali villages have witnessed series of attacks since the liberation of the area from Boko Haram fighters in 2015 with at least five attacks reported by locals in the last few weeks.
