Boat mishap: Kebbi gov’t plans strict regulation of marine transportation

The Kebbi State governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has hinted that the government will enforce a strict regulation of marine transportation in the state following the death of over 100 people in a boat mishap.

This was in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abubakar Mu’azu Dakingari, on Saturday.

The statement said: “Kebbi State Government will from now, strictly regulate marine transportation in the state in furtherance of efforts to safeguarding lives and property of commuters.

“Consequently, a law is underway to enforcing safety measures in the operations of boat and canoes, plying waterways.”

Daily Trust reports that a boat carrying about 200 passengers and heading to Warra in Kebbi State from Minna in Niger State had capsized, claiming about 100 lives.

Of the passengers on the boat, who were mostly traders and food vendors, 23 others were rescued.

The governor donated the sum of N11 million to the families of victims of the boat mishap.

Dakingari said Bagudu announced the donation when he visited warrah to condole with the bereaved families on Friday.

“Before departure, the governor donated more than eleven million naira to the families of those who lost their lives as well as to defray the cost of search and rescue, commending all volunteers who partook in the rescue operation.

 

Zamfara governor donates too

Zamfara State governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle also donated the sum of N30m to the families of the deceased.

Matawalle announced the donation on Saturday when he visited the Kebbi State governor on condolence in Birnin Kebbi.

He prayed for the souls of the dead to rest in peace.
