Blackout hits S/West states as fire guts transformer

A statement by the Public Affairs Head of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Mrs Seun Olagunju, said the fire destroyed transformer in the Osogbo Sub-regional/ Work Centre office of the company in Osun State on Friday.
It stated that parts of Akure, Ilesha, Ife, Ondo in Ondo State, Osogbo Complex, Osun State and Ado-Ekiti and Iwo in Ekiti State are now experiencing power rationing.
The statement which read in part said: “The fire which started after an explosive sound was heard from the 150MVA power transformer, raged for most part of the morning, but was successfully extinguished by the fire service, preventing it from spreading to the other transformers.”
The second transformer, it noted, tripped during the incident but was not affected by the fire.
It, however, said the TCN’s Protection, Control and Metering (PC&M) engineers successfully re-arranged the 132KV lines, taking supply from the station to use the second transformer and minimised the load-shedding effect in the affected areas.
