Blackout: FG orders troops to secure electricity workers carrying out repair

The federal government says it has ordered the troops to go all out in full force to provide cover for electricity workers in order to repair the critical national infrastructures that were destroyed by bandits.

It also said that there was confirmation that the electricity towers were brought down by bandits, adding that since when the incident happened, the President, Bola Tinubu, had given a marching order to provide security cover for electricity workers to repair the destroyed towers.

Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, disclosed this at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Abuja, during a workshop organised for policy makers and sector regulators on critical national information infrastructure protection and resilience.

Daily Trust had reported how the Northeast, Northwest, and parts of Northcentral Nigeria have been plunged into darkness for eight consecutive days, as a result of the tripping off of the 330kV circuit transmission line between Benue and Enugu, as well as the one between Shiroro and Kaduna.

Speaking at the workshop organized by the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre in ONSA, Badaru explained that they were working round the clock to ensure that all critical infrastructures are properly secured going forward.

“This morning, the National Security Adviser started with the tower, the electricity tower that has been brought down by bandits and that together we are pushing this morning to see how we secure the roads for the workers to go and fix and also develop means and ways to continue to protect those infrastructures.

“So, we are ready and able and we are charged by Mr. President’s order to be on our toes all the time. And I assure you, the National Security Adviser is always on his toes and pushing so hard for the protection of the national security assets,” the Defence Minister said.

While calling on all stakeholders to remain calm, he assured that the problem would be fixed as soon as possible.
