Nigeria’s women’s table tennis team has been eliminated from the Team Event of the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham after losing to England 3-2 on Saturday.
Offiong Edem and Fatimo Bello defeated Maria Tsaptsinos and Tin-Tin Ho of England in the Women’s Group 1 match by scores of 3-1 and 3-2, respectively, but it was not enough to advance the women as Bello and Edem lost their doubles match 3-0 and Ajoke Ojomu lost both of her singles matches to Charlotte Bardsley and Ho, respectively.

The women’s team finished third in Group 1 with a single point from three games.
In their first Team Event on Friday, they overcame St. Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0, but they lost to Singapore, who joined the hosts England in the quarterfinals.
Despite being eliminated from the women’s team event, the female table tennis players still have a chance to podium finish because they are still taking part in the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles competitions.
Meanwhile, the men’s team led by world No. 11 Quadri Aruna, defeated Cyprus 3-0 to go to the quarterfinals of Men’s Group 2. On Friday, they had won by the same score over Ghana and South Africa, two other African countries.
In the doubles Team Event, Bode Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo destroyed Iosif Elia and Christos Savva 3-0, while Aruna eliminated Marios Yiangou 3-2.
The African Games champion Omotayo then demonstrated his dominance over Savva with a 3-0 demolition to seal the Cypriots’ defeat.
