The Benue State House of Assembly has commenced moves against expensive burial rites among the people of the state.
Daily Trust on Sunday reports that the House passed a motion calling on the Benue state traditional council to aware the people on the negative implications of indulging in exorbitant burial rites.
Raphael Akume, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the House in a statement at the weekend, noted that the mover of the motion, Berger Alfred Emberga, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Assembly said it became necessary to do so.
Emberga drew the attention of the House to also take a stand on the matter which in his estimation had been over-flogged by churches and yet no reasonable attention was given to it.
The motion read in part, “The Tiv people in particular in historical times had simple and fantastic burial rites where they mourned and buried their dead within three days without incurring costs for food, drinks, and expensive tomb and caskets.”
Meanwhile, the lawmakers unanimously accepted the prayers of the motion calling on the Benue state traditional councils to put a stop to exorbitant burial rites and for the dead to be buried within ten days from the day the person was confirmed dead.
