The Benue State Livestock Guards at the weekend impounded 92 cows for contravening the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.
State Commander of the Livestock Guards, Linus Zaki, told journalists in Makurdi that 60 cows were impounded in Ohimini and 30 in Logo local government areas of the state.
Zaki, who displayed the animals, said that owners of the affected livestock were required to pay the stipulated fines to get back their cattle.
He stressed the determination of the guards to the enforcement of the legislation which came into existence in May 2017.
On his part, the State Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Malam Ibrahim Galma, promised to step up and sensitize the herdsmen on importance of the grazing law which he noted was more beneficial to them.
Galma who was on the site where the cows were impounded, expressed gratitude to the State Government for its cooperation and understanding while enforcing the law.
