Benue: Couple in police net over ‘child trafficking’

The Police in Benue State have arrested a couple over child trafficking.

The suspected couple, Mr Benjamin Uttah and Mrs Ada Benjamin Uttah, were said to have been involved in child trafficking long before their eventually arrest about a week ago in Makurdi.

State Police Commissioner, Mukaddas Garba, who paraded the duo on Thursday at the Police headquarters in Makurdi, reiterated the command’s commitment to rid the state of human traffickers and other criminals.

Garba noted that the arrest of the couple on August 12, was achieved after a teenage pregnant girl of Orji-River in Enugu State reported at ‘C’ Police Division in Makurdi that, while she was frustrated with her unwanted pregnancy, an unknown young man deceived her and took her to the house of one Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Uttah.

Uttah was said to have offered to take care of the pregnant teenager until delivery and paid her the sum of N200, 000 for her child.

The Police Commissioner said that during investigation, the suspects were arrested and further investigation revealed that Ada Benjamin and her husband had been involved in several other cases of child trafficking in the state.
