Minister of Labour and Productivity revealed this yesterday during his maiden visit to the Labour House in Abuja when he met with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

He said, “I came to convey to you and to reaffirm that Tuesday next week; we shall be inaugurating the National Minimum Wage Committee which I am sure the entire country is waiting for so that we can kick start tripartite dialogue on the review of the minimum wage.”

He said, “I use this opportunity to inform our people that the committee will be headed by Mr. (Justice) Modibbo Alfa Belgore, the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria who has graciously agreed to chair the committee. He is somebody all of us in this country are very proud of. I am sure the outcome of that work will receive the kind of prestige and credibility that must follow very serious work of reviewing the national minimum wage.”

The committee is expected to review the current national minimum wage and come out with a “reasonable suggestion for government taking into consideration all the various factors that form the basis or the parameters for this type of work.” The minister explained that the committee will consist of representatives of labour, government and employers.
