Bayelsa Queens and FC Robo of Lagos opened their campaigns in this year’s Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament (BOWFT) with victories in their group matches played yesterday.
In the opening match of Group B at the University of Benin (Uniben) Sports Complex, Bayelsa Queens edged Nasarawa Amazons 2-1.
Blessing Abiola put Bayelsa Queens in front in the 12th minute and doubled her side’s lead in the 24th minute from the spot to take home the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Defending champions, FC Robo of Lagos also opened their title defence in Group C with 3-0 thrashing of Championship side, Fortress Ladies.

Deborah Peters of FC Robo opened the scoring in the 15th minute but 23 minutes later Marvelous Akpoboro, levelled scores for her side.
However, on resumption, the more experienced FC Robo took the lead again in the 59th minute and sealed victory with a third goal three minutes from regulation time.
Folashade Ijamulisi of FC Robo emerged as the Most Valuable Player.
In a post-match interview, Folashade, a member of the national U-17 team, the Flamingos, said her team’s fighting spirit gave them the win.
She added that the task before FC Robo is to qualify for the group stage of the 3rd edition of the competition.
“It was not an easy match but we thank God for the victory. We are here to defend our title but first we want to qualify from our group,” she said.
