Bayelsa fixes April 6 for council polls

Bayelsa State Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) has fixed April 6 for the conduct of elections to local government councils in the state.

The tenure of the elected local government chairmen and councillors in the state expired in early 2022, while the caretaker committees have been running the affairs of the local government areas.

Speaking after a meeting with political stakeholders at the commission’s office in Yenagoa, BYSIEC Chairman, Peter Singabele, said they could not conduct the council election in 2022 because their timetable clashed with that of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the general election.

He said the Commission started its preparation with the stakeholders in order to give them firm assurance that BYSIEC is prepared for the election.

Political parties present at the meeting expressed the desire of stakeholders from the eight local government areas and 105 wards in the state to have elected officials running the affairs of the councils.
