Bayelsa begins free education for kids with special needs

The Bayelsa State Government has launched a programme to provide free education, including tuition, feeding and uniforms, for children with special needs.

Governor Douye Diri announced the initiative on Tuesday during a meeting where he welcomed 12 newly graduated special needs educators who were trained at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Port Harcourt courtesy of the Bayelsa State Education Trust Fund (EDTF).

Governor Diri emphasised his administration’s commitment to inclusive education, ensuring no child was left behind, particularly those with impairments.

He directed the immediate employment of the 12 graduates and praised EDTF for its role in supporting the initiative which was inherited from the previous administration.

The governor noted that the special needs school would benefit from the state’s free education policy already in place for technical colleges and model schools.
