The chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Jothan Amos Esq, says the ongoing peaceful presidential primaries in the state is due to a direct primaries approach adopted by the party.
He also disclosed that the state chapter of the party has also emulated the direct presidential primary for its national and state assemblies aspirants to help them present the popular and acceptable candidates during 2019 general elections.
Speaking with journalists at the party secretariat in Yenagoa on Friday, before moving to his ward for the exercise, the party chairman said that a direct primary approach will foster peace among party members.
He said: “The constitution of our party stipulates either direct, indirect and consensus primary approaches, but the national and Bayelsa state chapter have adopted a direct primary because it will help the party elect popular candidates that can win elections in 2019.”
“We will always give all aspirants a level-playing ground during this primaries, because politics must be played without bitterness.”
Meanwhile, at Obogoro and Yenagoa Ward 1, as at the time our correspondent visited the area, there was no sign of presidential primary election, as few party members seen around said they were still waiting for the arrival of the official for the exercise to commence.
