Bayana Bayana spank Super Falcons 4-2 to win Aisha Buhari Cup

The Bayana Bayana of South Africa have proven once again that they are a force to reckon with in the continent following yesterday’s convincing 4-2 victory over nine-time African champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria to lift the maiden edition of the Aisha Buhari Women’s Invitational Football Tournament at the Mobolaji Johnson stadium Onikan, in Lagos.

The Nigerian side endured a calamitous first half as they went down by 3-0. An own goal from Alozie Michelle opened the scoring in the 6th minute while Motlhalo Linda made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after veteran defender Enome Ebi handled the ball in the box.

It got worse for the Super Falcons as South Africans added a third goal before the end of first half from a Salgado Gabriela’s header.

At the restart of the second half, the Super Falcons fought back with substitute Ikechukwu Vivian scoring two goals.

Any hope of the Falcons winning the game was ended when the South Africans added a fourth goal from the penalty spot a few minutes to the end of the match to make it 4-2.

Prior to this game, the Super Falcons had failed to win their last two meetings with Ellis’ side, including losing 1-0 in the group stage before snatching the 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations title via penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw.

Nigeria will confront Ghana in a high-profile first round tie of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in October and could meet Cote d’Ivoire or Niger if they advance.
