Tensions have escalated between the Bauchi State Government and Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, over the recent shooting in Zaranda village, Toro Local Government Area.
The incident on September 10, 2024, resulted in the death of a charcoal seller and left two others severely injured.
Senator Buba has alleged that the shooting, which killed 35-year-old Abubakar Yahaya and injured 20-year-old Husseini Yunusa and 16-year-old Yayangida Husseini, was carried out by a militia group led by an individual named Shayi. The senator condemned the act as an extrajudicial killing and vowed to seek justice for the victims, describing the event as a brutal and unwarranted attack.
In response, the Bauchi State Government has criticised Senator Buba’s statements, calling for clarification from the senator regarding his claims. The government accused Buba of making inflammatory remarks that undermine the efforts of local security agencies.

Abubakar Abdulhamid Bununu, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, condemned the senator’s comments as irresponsible and potentially damaging to state security.
“The senator’s statements are baseless and an attempt to tarnish the image of the state government and its security agencies. Such reckless allegations could compromise state security and create unnecessary tension among citizens,” Bununu said.
The state government has urged Senator Buba to retract his statements and apologise to the people of Bauchi State. Bununu stressed that the government is committed to ensuring justice for the Zaranda shooting and has initiated a thorough investigation.
Senator Buba, in a public statement, assured the families of the victims that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. He emphasised his commitment to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable and called for a thorough police investigation into the incident.
Police Public Relations Officer Ahmed Mohammed Wakil confirmed the shooting and detailed the injuries sustained by the victims. He noted that Abubakar Yahaya succumbed to his injuries at the Primary HealthCare Center in Zaranda Gari.
The incident has sparked protests in Zaranda village, leading to roadblocks and sporadic firing by members of a quasi-security outfit. The situation remains tense as authorities work to address the unrest and ensure justice for the victims.
