A group of elders under the Bauchi State Togetherness and Development Forum has urged the National Assembly to step down the proposed tax reform bills, citing their potential to worsen the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, especially in Bauchi State.
During a press conference in Bauchi, the forum’s chairman, Abdullahi Koli, called on Bauchi senators-Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central), Shehu Buba (Bauchi South), and Ismail Dahuwa (Bauchi North)-to oppose the bills in the Senate.
Koli stated that the forum is deeply concerned about the economic challenges stemming from recent government policies, including the removal of oil subsidies, which have led to rising inflation, higher costs of living, and increased insecurity.
He explained that the new taxes and higher charges, including electricity tariffs and electronic transfer fees, have further burdened citizens, leaving many unable to afford basic needs such as food, healthcare, and education.

The chairman criticised the justification provided by the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, which aims to maximize tax revenue and reduce reliance on oil revenue.
Instead of increasing taxes, Koli advocated for measures to minimise taxes and reduce government expenditures.
He suggested curtailing unnecessary expenses such as reducing the presidential fleet, extravagant official trips, and other non-essential government activities.
