Suspected armed bandits have killed at least 17 people in an attack on Jumaat Mosque at Dumama village in Zurmi local government area of Zamfara state, Daily Trust gathered.
Residents said a motorbike riding gang of armed men yesterday arrived the area, firing at the congregation when the Imam was delivering his sermon.
“When the gunmen laid siege, they kept their motorbikes at a distance and then marched to the mosque and started firing at worshippers,” a resident simply identified as Makau said.
“More than ten people were injured and taken to a medical facility in Moriki town and they are responding to treatments on various gunshot wounds inflicted on them,” he added.
He said some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force in the mosque attempted to fight back but were overpowered because most of them had come to the mosque without firearms.
The spokesman of the state police command could not be reached for comment as at the time of filing this report.
