The police have confirmed the killing of 11 persons during bandits’ attack in Unguwar Lamido community of Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

While confirming the incident in a press statement, the Katsina State Police spokesman, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, dismissed reports suggesting that over forty were killed in the area.

“The command is aware of a misleading report making the rounds on some sections of social media, especially Facebook, that armed bandits attacked three villages in Bakori LGA of Katsina State and shot dead about 40 people.

“The command wishes to categorically debunk this misleading report and set the record straight.

“The facts are: On May 25, 2024, at about 2145 hrs, armed bandits in their numbers wielding dangerous weapons, such as AK-47 rifles, launched an attack on Unguwar Lamido village, Bakori LGA, Katsina State, where they shot and killed about 11 persons.

“Swiftly, the DPO Bakori divisional headquarters mobilised operatives in collaboration with members of the vigilantes and responded to the scene, where they successfully restored normalcy, and prevented further loss of life,” Aliyu has said.

However, earlier reports indicated that the attacks took place in three communities of Unguwar Lamido, Unguwar Baro and Unguwar Kare in Bakori LGA of the state where over 40 were reported killed.

Sources said the terrorists who struck around 2 am Friday also set houses ablaze thereby destroying properties.

“The bandits had attempted several times to attack Unguwar Kare in the past but failed until now, as the residents were able to defend their village,” the source added.

In another incident, suspected bandits had also attacked the Yartaba community in Kankara Local Government Area of the state, killing about 15 persons.

A source in the area said the attack happened on Friday where the terrorists began shooting sporadically on arrival and in the process 15 residents were killed.

“About 15 people were killed in that attack most of them are women and children, their corpses were brought yesterday for burial in Kankara town,” he said.

He added that the bandits’ intent was to prevent the locals from going to farm this farming season as they (bandits) said it during the attacks.
