The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to deploy the Army to Gurbin Bore town of Zamfara State to stem the rising incidences of killings by bandits, kidnapping for ransom and armed robbery.
The lawmakers also urged the Ministry of Defence to reinforce troops around Zurmi and Shinkafi areas of the state as they urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to the affected communities.
This was the outcome of a motion of urgent public importance by Abubakar Moriki (APC, Zamfara) on the “urgent call to tackle the perennial and incessant banditry and killings in Zamfara state.”
Moriki expressed concern over the worsening security situations, especially armed banditry, kidnapping for ransom and armed robbery in Shinkafi and Zurmi areas of Zamfara state.
“On 26 October, 2018, unknown bandits invaded Gurbin Bore in Zumi area of Zamfara State and killed six persons, including a Police personnel, and razed about 17 houses.
“In the last one month, no fewer than 30 persons were kidnapped, including minors,” he said.
The lawmaker admitted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s far-reaching decision of deploying Special Forces to the affected areas had resulted in tremendous decrease in cases of bandit attacks in some communities.
He, however, regretted that the inability to sustain the tempo of intervention by security forces had given the bandits a leeway to re-group and thus, able to launch pockets of deadlier attacks in recent times.
He further lamented that the state government’s spending of over N5 billion in logistics support to the Special Forces between 2011 and 2017 had not translated to the much-needed peace in the state.
