A former Super Eagles attacking winger, Tijani Babangida believes the Super Eagles selected by Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr for the two friendly matches against Cote d’Ivoire and Tunisia are good enough for the assignment.
The three-time African champions have not come together since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus which forced the total shutdown of all sporting activities.
Both games have been arranged by the Nigeria Football Federation to prepare the Eagles for the next rounds of 2022 AFCON qualifiers, home and away against Sierra Leone in November.
Speaking to Daily Trust on Tuesday, the president of the National Association of Nigerian Professional Footballers said the new faces invited to the team were necessary to bring and sustain competition in the team.
“The list is good and with the new boys invited by Rohr, it will make the team stronger and more competitive.
“It is good to give the new players that needed exposure on the international scene and I will advise them to take the chances with both hands.
“I know most of these boys were eagerly waiting for such a chance to represent Nigeria,” he said.
The former Ajax of Holland star further said Rohr’s decision to invite new players to the team shouldn’t be misconstrued to mean he does not have a stable squad.
“The bulk of the regulars are invited and it is not a question of not having regular team players. It is good to try out new players especially for friendlies and see how to make the team better,” he noted.
The newly invited players are Slovakia’s SKF Sered goalkeeper, Matthew Yakubu; Porto defender, Zaidu Sanusi; Denmark’s FC Midtjylland midfielder, Frank Onyeka, CSKA Moscow’s forward, Chidera Ejuke, and TSV Hartberg’s midfielder, Tijani Samson.
