AZ-ZAWAJ centre gives medical items, scholarships to Tungan Maje community

AZ-ZAWAJ Women and Children Intervention Centre (AWIC) has donated medical items to women and children in Tungan Maje community of the FCT.

The centre, which was established in 2017, also gave secondary education scholarships to nine orphans in the community.

The founder of the centre, Asma’u Abe Wala, while presenting the items said the aim was to enlighten mothers in the community on how to safeguard and combat malaria.

“The centre is in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) under the Federal Ministry of Health aimed at assisting to combat malaria and also enlighten women on how to safeguard their children from malaria. It tests them and gives them drugs and treated mosquito nets,” she said.

“Similarly, we are empowering women with startup loans to start their businesses and repay after a certain period of time. By so doing we want to keep them engaged and also empower the community,” she added.

One of the beneficiaries, Amina Tanko, who used the loans in trading, commended the centre for their humanitarian gestures

“I went into business with N10,000 and have gained N15,000 over a short period of time. I have been empowered and I call on Nigerians to help other communities too,” she said.

The Chief of Tungan Maje said the medical outreach was timely as malaria treatment was becoming difficult for locals due to inadequate or lack of funds.

The chief, who was represented by Mohammed Abdullahi, also said the gestures would go a long way in educating families on the prevention of malaria.
