AWDT releases 2019 African Writers Awards shortlist

The African Writers Development Trust (AWDT) has released the shortlist for the 2019 African Writers Awards.

In the children’s literature category judged by Tanzania’s Nahida Esmail are ‘Albinism Is Not A Curse’ by Oroni Tendera (Kenya), ‘The Zappinator’ by Eme Ogbu (Nigeria), and ‘Cultural Stereotypes’ by Kui Gitonga (Kenya).

‘Ungrateful Girl’ by Temani Nkalolang (Botswana), ‘Breaking the Norm; Osu’ by Bliss Boma (Nigeria), and ‘Bambi’ by Nkateko Priscilla Masinga (South Africa) made the flash fiction shortlist. It was judged by Zambia’s Adah Bitiah Chembo.

For poetry, judged by Nigeria’s Kolabomi Adeko, ‘Young Alone’ by Njoka Dickson (Kenya), ‘Pongwe’s Life’ by Andrea B Matambo (Zambia) and ‘Where Do You Come From’ by Karimot Odebode (Nigeria) made the list.

Also, in the short stories category judged by Sabah Carrim (Mauritius), ‘A Lesson in Diffraction’ by Justin Clement (Nigeria), ‘Wild Things’ by Mazpa Ejikem (Nigeria), and ‘Hiding’ by Priscillar Matara (Botswana) made the list.

Winners will be announced during the 2019 African Writers Conference to hold at the Sarit Centre, Nairobi, Kenya on September 28 this year.

AWDT is an organisation that promotes reading culture, encourages cross cultural learning, sharing of creative ideas, provides mentoring and capacity building among writers, irrespective of their economic, religious, cultural, tribal, national, political or philosophical orientation.
