Atiku, Wike factions bicker over thuggery in Rivers

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and those of Governor Nyesom Wike are enmeshed in blame game over the waves of political thuggery in the state.

The Chairman of Publicity and Communications of the PDP campaign council in the state, Hon. Ogbonna Nwuke, has alleged that Atiku’s loyalists were planning to unleash violence to create panic and an atmosphere of fear and terror in the state.

Ogbonna dismissed as a bare-faced falsehood the allegation by the Rivers State spokesman of the presidential campaign, Dr Leloonu Nwibubasa, that the state chapter of the party was planning to recruit 20 political thugs in each of the 23 local government areas of the state to intimidate voters during the elections.

He equally denied the allegation that some political agents loyal to Governor Wike were pulling down or defacing the billboards or posters carrying the faces of candidates of other political parties including those aspiring for the office of the president in the state.

But the Director of Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Council in Rivers State, Dr Abbey Sekibo, alleged that supporters of Atiku in the state have been penciled for attacks by the loyalists of Governor Nyesom Wike.

Dr Sekibo, a former Minister of Transportation, alleged that the governor has directed all the council chairmen in the state to ensure nobody campaigns or holds any kind of meeting for Atiku in their respective local government areas.

He threatened that Atiku’s supporters would resort to “self-help” if the alleged attack on them continued, and called on all security agencies to protect their members in the state.
