A long distance national coach, Stephen Nuhu, has lauded the proposed construction of a High Altitude Performance Centre to develop long distance races in the country.
Nuhu, who made the commendation in a telephone interview yesterday, described the idea as a “good development” that would further improve the performance of long distance athletes.
Hamad Kalkaba, the President, Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA), had during the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Feb.6 said a High Altitude Performance Centre would be established in Jos.
“There is nothing better that can happen to Nigeria than a High Performance Centre. Kenya has one where experts are assembled to train athletes.
“With the centre in Nigeria, long distance races, within a short period of time, will develop. We have athletes on ground, besides, sport has gone scientific,” he said.
Nuhu also said that Nigeria’s long distance runners could attain the Olympic podium, if there were sponsors that could facilitate competitions.
“In two years, if Nigeria wants to attain the Olympic podium, it can be achieved with sponsors. Athletes need to rest well and have good diets,” he added. (NAN)
