ATBU ASUU chair accuses soldiers of assault

Some students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Monday night vandalised two private cars belonging to some military personnel who allegedly assaulted the branch chairman of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), Dr Ibrahim Inuwa.

Daily Trust gathered that trouble started when some military men in a convoy of two vehicles wanted to drive into the campus but were stopped at the gate by the university’s security because their vehicles had tinted glasses, which is against the regulations of the university.

Inuwa said he was on his way home when he saw the soldiers harassing the security man.

“They started shoving me, and then one of them went to the extreme and slapped me three consecutive times. They were hitting me that I should keep quiet,” he said.

When contacted in a telephone interview, ATBU Head of Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Kabiru Garba Aminu, who confirmed the incident, said there was a conflict between some military men and their personnel, and the issue had been resolved.

When asked about the assault on the ASUU Chairperson, Aminu said, “I am not aware about the assault.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Ahmed Wakili, also confirmed the incident, adding that “the problem has been resolved and the CP has directed for a discreet investigation to be conducted.”
