ASUU strike: Kaduna varsity insists on resumption, lecturers adamant

Controversy has trailed the resumption order of the Kaduna State University (KASU) as members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the school have refused to resume classes despite the threat of losing their jobs.

It would be recalled that Governor Nasir el-Rufai, a week ago, threatened to sack the lecturers if they failed to resume classes because they had no dispute with the state government.

The management reopened the school on Monday to allow students to sit for their examinations, particularly the final year students.

Daily Trust gathered that the ASUU members refused to take part in the examination supervision.

The union, in a resolution issued at the end of its congress held on August 2, and signed by the branch Chairman, Peter Adamu, said it would forward all the irregularities noticed during the examination conducted.

Adamu told Daily Trust that they didn’t partake in the examination because the national strike declared by ASUU was ongoing.

He said, “We are still on strike and committed to the ongoing strike. So far, we have not seen any of our members participating in the examination because we belong to our national body.”

But reacting, the acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Ashafa, urged students to resume classes, advising them not be deceived by the lecturers.

He said, “No student should be allowed to be deceived that no examination is taking place because whoever misses a paper will have carry over and waste a year.”

He further said as far as the institution was concerned, KASU-ASUU was only doing solidarity with the federal universities because KASU was not directly affected by the issues affecting the federal universities.

He, therefore, advised the lecturers to abide by the management’s directive by returning to class.

He said, “On the basis of this, we thought we should be patriotic; our students have been at home for over five months with no any sign that this thing will be resolved soon.”
