ASUU kicks as Ibadan varsity plans convocation amid strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has faulted the decision of the outgoing Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka, to conduct 2020 convocation and foundation ceremonies amid the ongoing strike, describing it as “divisive and mischievous”.

The Ibadan zone of ASUU, which comprises University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osun State University and Kwara State University, said the ongoing strike is total and comprehensive.

The Zonal Coordinator of the union, Professor Ade Adejumo, in a statement yesterday, alleged that the decision of the vice chancellor to go ahead with the convocation was a ploy to create acrimony among union members.

“In the spirit of the current ASUU strike, holding convocation ceremonies at this time would be a violation of the principle of the ongoing strike as we consider that such a move can only at best compromise the few gains of the current struggle to rescue public university education in Nigeria,” it said.

It urged the university’s visitor, President Mohammadu Buhari, Minister of Education, Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Council of the University of Ibadan, and other stakeholders to prevail on the vice chancellor to desist “from this self-serving venture.”

The public relations officer of the institution, Mr. Muhammed Oladejo, could not be reached for comment as at the time of filling this report.

He did not pick phone calls and neither did he reply text message sent to him.
