Assault: ASUU issues fresh threat to DSS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) chapter, has condemned the recent assault on its Kano Zonal Coordinator, Professor Abdulkadir Muhammad, by operatives of Department of State Security (DSS).

He was reported to have been physically assaulted by the DSS operatives on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, while on his way to Katsina for the union’s national executive council assignment.

In a statement on Monday, Chairperson of BUK-ASUU, Professor Haruna Musa, and its Secretary, Dr Musa Umar Madugu, called on the service to take the necessary action to prevent the association from filing a legal action.

According to the statement, “We all know that the statutory responsibility of security personnel to protect lives and property, not to harass, intimidate and assault innocent citizens.

“Alas, DSS operative are notorious for crass violation of fundamental human rights of innocent Nigerians through torture and assaults.

“We recall that sometime in 2012, they invaded ASUU-BUK secretariat at Old Campus and assaulted our then ASUU Kano Zonal Coordinator and immediate past branch Chairperson in their attempt to abduct him.

“Therefore, we urge the DSS to investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book in order to stop the anarchy, torture and harassment of innocent Nigerians. The union is ready to deploy all the available legal and legitimate instruments to ensure that the justice is done on the matter,” the statement added.

The DSS is yet to respond to these allegations.
