Asaba 2022: Free-for-all at boxing event over cheating

There was serious commotion yesterday at the boxing venue of the ongoing National Sports Festival in Asaba when irate fans believed to be supporters of Team Ondo pelted the judges with harmful objects.

Daily Trust gathered that a boxer from Ondo state fought against his opponent from Delta state and after the three rounds, the judges announced the Delta state boxer as the winner.

The decision didn’t go down well with Ondo fans, spectators and officials who cried foul and allegedly caused chaos at the Event centre on Okpanam road.

“The Ondo guys got angry because the same thing happened yesterday (Monday). Once the Delta boxer was announced as the winner, hell was let loose.

“Fans of Team Ondo got angry and threw bottles at the judges, then chairs followed. Everywhere was scattered and then the judges started running,” she said.

Ogunleye then told our correspondent that a female judge had to use her boxing skills to defend herself against a male attacker.
