A statement issued in Lagos by the Interim National Publicity of the party Alhaji Lai Mohammed sai, the arrest of lawmakers because of political difference with the governor of the state portrays disregard to laid down laws. The party said the federal government was setting “a dangerous trend for the survival of democracy in the country.”
The arrested lawmakers including the clerk of the state house of assembly were released yesterday by the anti-corruption agency under administrative bail. The APC called for the immediate release of the legislators as it further accused the federal government of turning a blind eye to other public officials who have been indicted of corruption in Oduahgate and the fuel subsidy scam and the SURE-P heist.
“Nowhere in the world are lawmakers arrested for carrying out their constitutional-mandated role of approving a budget. The world must be having a good laugh at the lack of ingenuity by a government that is so eager to extract a pound of flesh from supposed political enemies that it would orchestrate arrests for offences unknown to law,” the statement said.
The party stressed that the allegation that Gov. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s supplementary budget was meant to cover-up a dubious transaction due to a budget review request to the State Assembly to the value of N28 billion from the initial budget of N24 billion is as spurious as it is laughable, the APC said.
